GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATION OFFERING

PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION (GOALS):
To teach the skills needed to resolve conflict through effective communication skills including negotiation and mediation.

COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
Discusses and defines images of conflict, personal styles in dealing with conflict, and specific conflict styles. Participants learn to utilize communication skills, effective listening, paraphrasing, rapport building, negotiation, and mediation to resolve conflict.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS (VIDEO USE, ETC.):
Didactic presentation and group / experiential discussion and role play exercises.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (LISTED NUMERICALLY)

• Gain insight into personal communication & conflict management style.

• Enhance listening skills that will give others the assurance that you understand them.

• Deal effectively with individuals who have intense emotions.

• Develop problem-solving skills helpful in your own conflicts and when working with others.

• Learn the stages of the negotiation and mediation process and practice application.

• Understand ethical and legal issues for counselor / mediator.

• Become acquainted with available resources.
